Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) offers a unique combination of properties that make it highly advantageous for garment applications compared to traditional materials like PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and PE (polyethylene).
1. Elasticity & Flexibility
TPU: Combines high elasticity with excellent recovery, allowing it to stretch and return to its original shape without permanent deformation. This is critical for garments requiring dynamic movement (e.g., sportswear, compression wear).
PVC: Rigid unless plasticized, but plasticizers can migrate over time, causing brittleness and loss of flexibility.
PE: Limited elasticity and prone to permanent deformation under stress.
2. Breathability & Comfort
TPU: Can be engineered into microporous or monolithic breathable membranes (e.g., for waterproof yet breathable jackets), enabling moisture vapor transmission (MVTR) while blocking liquid water.
PVC/PE: Non-breathable, trapping heat and moisture, leading to discomfort in activewear or outdoor gear.

TPU:

PVC: Chemically resistant but degrades under UV exposure and becomes brittle over time.
PE: Less resistant to oils and solvents.
5. Transparency & Aesthetic Versatility
Garment TPU Film: Can be produced in clear, transparent forms without yellowing, ideal for seamless or visually sleek designs (e.g., waterproof zippers, decorative laminates).
PVC: Prone to yellowing with age and UV exposure.
PE: Typically opaque or translucent.
6. Adhesion & Processability
TPU: Bonds well with fabrics via heat lamination or adhesives without compromising flexibility. Compatible with diverse textiles (polyester, nylon, knits).
PVC/PE: Require higher processing temperatures or adhesives, risking fabric damage or stiff seams.
7. Temperature Stability
TPU: Performs across a wide temperature range (-30°C to 80°C), retaining flexibility in cold conditions and resisting melting in heat.
PVC: Brittle in cold temperatures unless plasticized.
PE: Becomes stiff at low temperatures.
8. Weight & Durability
TPU: Lightweight yet highly durable, withstanding repeated washing, abrasion, and mechanical stress. Ideal for lightweight performance apparel.
PVC: Heavier and less durable over time due to plasticizer migration.
PE: Lightweight but lacks tear resistance.
